Harvey Remembered in St. Louis at 1st Harvey Milk March 2010

23 May

ST. LOUIS – Scores of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) and allied community members marched from The Grove to City Hall, May 22 to mark the 80th birthday of LGBT icon, Harvey Milk. The three mile march was followed by a  rally  at City Hall featuring local, regional and national advocates for equality.

Harvey Bernard Milk (May 22, 1930 – November 27, 1978) was an American politician who became the first openly gay man to be elected to major public office in the United States after winning a seat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. He was assasinated along with San Francisco Mayor George Mascone by Supervisor Dan White.

The concept of the Harvey Milk Day of Action was the brainchild of Equality Across America. Locally, Coalition Partners PROMO, Show Me No Hate, Gay Invasion, TransHaven Missouri, Growing American Youth, The St. Louis Gay History Project and the LGBT Community Center of St. Louis built upon the concept to create a week of events culminating with Saturday’s march and rally.
